That good design begins with purpose. That craftsmanship should be evident without demanding attention. That the things we choose to carry should be useful, beautiful and made to endure.
We believe in being properly dressed and properly equipped. In good manners without ceremony. In curiosity, self-reliance and knowing when rules are better observed and when they are better ignored.
We believe adventure is not defined by how far one travels, but by the spirit in which one approaches life.

Adventure is not a destination.
It is an attitude to life. A willingness to remain curious, embrace the unfamiliar and occasionally choose the less obvious route.

Spiritus Audendi is the philosophy of the House.
It is an invitation to remain curious, to venture beyond the familiar and, occasionally, to take the less obvious route.
Adventure need not involve summiting mountains or crossing oceans. It might be a journey somewhere unknown, accepting an unexpected invitation, pursuing an unlikely idea or simply refusing to become too comfortable.

THE FOUNDERS
Balfour Cairns was founded in Edinburgh by Ewan Cairns and Brett Ford, united by an ambition to build a global luxury House with a distinctly Scottish character.
They were later joined by Nathan Jones as a partner, bringing together experience across brand, design, service and adventure.
What they share is a belief in objects made properly. Things with purpose and character, intended not simply to be admired, but carried, used and made part of a life well lived.
TRADITIONS OF THE HOUSE
Certain customs guide the work of Balfour Cairns.
They are not marketing devices, but simple practices that establish provenance, recognise ownership and preserve the history of the objects issued by the House.
Together they form traditions intended to endure.
THE HOUSE REGISTER
Selected numbered pieces issued by Balfour Cairns are entered into the House Register.
Each is recorded with its individual number, year of issue and original Registered Owner, establishing a permanent record of its provenance within the House.
It is the beginning of an object's recorded history, one that may continue through many journeys, many years and, eventually, many hands.
FOUNDERS ISSUE
From time to time, the House issues small, numbered collections conceived by the founders.
Each Founders Issue is produced in strictly limited numbers and recorded accordingly by the House.
When the final example has been issued, the edition is closed.
It will not be repeated.
CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY
Every numbered piece entered into the House Register is accompanied by its Certificate of Authenticity.
The Certificate records the identity of the piece, its individual number, year of issue and original Registered Owner, establishing its provenance within the House.
It should remain with the piece throughout its life, preserving the record of its origin and, should the piece one day pass to another custodian, its place in the continuing story of the House.
CUSTODIANSHIP
We prefer to think of ownership differently.
Exceptional objects have a habit of outliving the people who first acquire them. A Balfour Cairns piece may therefore be owned, but for a chapter of a much longer story.
Its owner becomes its custodian.
To carry it. Use it. Add character to it.
And, perhaps one day, pass it on.
